WINTER THEATRE
ЗИМНИЙ ТЕАТР

About
The main venue in Sochi, Winter Theatre looks like a true temple of art and music with its 88 elaborate Corinthian columns and statues. The theatre was built in 1934-1937 in a popular Neoclassical style, just like the famous sanatoriums that surround it. Statues of the muses of art, architecture and sculpture created by a renowned Soviet sculptor Vera Mukhina crown the building. Considering that during that time Sochi was a sleepy town with several pre-Revolutionary resorts, the scale of this project is particularly impressive. However, the population of Sochi grew rapidly, and the architects definitely had vacationers in view when they planned a concert hall for 950 people. Today, it's still the main stage in the city, where acclaimed artists from all over the world perform. The theatre has both classical music concerts, ballets, ioperas, dramas, and modern gigs by Russian and foreign music bands. Some of the performers are dubious to say the least (especially Russian pop singers from the 90s and Russian comic shows), but if you're lucky you might get to see a ballet by the Bolshoi Theatre troop, or a concert by an acclaimed Russian pianist.
