A new place in town, Heroes of Our Time is a cool café well stocked with books. Even the name of the place refers to the famous novel of Mikhail Lermontov. Heroes of Our Time is a new concept of a café which operates both as a brew bar and a restaurant serving tasty freshly-made food. 1554 is the year when the first coffeeshop in the world opened its doors in Istanbul. The motto of the place 'all about coffee and a little bit about food' says it all. The coffee menu is large and varied, it includes classics such as espresso, latte and flat white, as well as their seasonal drinks and such Russian invention as creamy and sweet vanilla Raf coffee. Good news for late sleepers, breakfasts are served here all day long, and you can find everything from eggs to porridges, pancakes and granola. They also have good value set lunches with soups, salads and sandwiches.

A small café with quirky design calls itself 'an alcohol-free bar'. True, there's no alcohol on the menu, only a dozen of smoothies and freshly-squeezed juices, milkshakes and lemonades. They also have snacks such as sandwiches and waffles. Don't be surprised when you find vintage leather suitcases in place of stools -it's a bow to a quaint Russian tradition to sit on a suitcase before setting off on a journey.

This cheap local eatery offers hearty portions and homelike ambience. What they call a 'home cuisine' is a kind of food you'd find your friend's mother and grandmother cooking at home. It's a mix of Soviet and Russian food with borschts, dumplings, porridges, cutlets and pies. But the centerpiece of the menu is, of course, solyanka, a rich spicy and sour Russian soup with cabbage, picked cucumbers and sour cream.
