SOBRANIE RESTAURANT & MUSEUM
РЕСТОРАН-МУЗЕЙ "СОБРАНИЕ"

About
The new (and the only) restaurant on the territory of the Rostov Kremlin opened its doors in the end of December 2015. Sobranie is a branch of a well-known restaurant in Yaroslavl which works under the same name. Although potatoes and mushrooms currently dominate the menu, they also serve fish from the Lake Nero, some meat dishes, and Russian staples such as pancakes, dumplings, pastry, and Olivier salad. The portions are hearty, and the food is delicious. Besides, they have set lunches daily from 12 until 2.30pm for as little as 170₽. Sobranie is also the only place on the territory of the kremlin where you can get a proper breakfast (it's particularly useful for those who're staying at the hotel inside the kremlin). Freshly-cooked breakfast is served daily from 10am until 12pm, choose between 2 sets, each including two hot dishes, pastry, bread, and a cup of tea, all for 150₽.
The restaurant occupies one of the most important buildings in the kremlin, the Red Chamber. Originally, it was the quarters of the tsars when they visited Rostov. So when you enter the restaurant through the heavy wooden doors, and see those vaulted ceilings, tiny windows, and antique chandeliers it does feel like being in a museum. In the wall niches you can notice various vessels, pots and jugs made by a local artisan in a traditional Rostov technique called black-polished pottery. All these items are on sale.
Info
Rostov Kremlin, Red Chamber (Ростовский Кремль, Красная Палата)
The restaurant is located in the building called Red Chamber (although the building itself is white). Look for a white two-storey building with a roofed staircase outside. The restaurant is located under the staircase, it has a separate entrance from the street. To get there from outside the kremlin after 5pm, ring the bell by the central entrance, and tell the security that you're going to the restaurant.

РЕСТОРАН-МУЗЕЙ "СОБРАНИЕ"

About
A small and cozy restaurant in a traditional Russian style belongs to the hotel Russkoye Podvorye (meaning Russian farmstead). At the moment, it is the only place in Rostov where you can try a huge variety of traditional Russian dishes as they were served centuries ago. Some combinations may sound strange, and taste even stranger, but it's still worth giving a go, and find your favourite Russian dish. The menu is indeed huge and hard to understand even for Russians. Many dishes have names written in Old Russian, and it almost feels like reading a medieval Russian book. So prepare to ask a lot, and rely on the waiters when you order. There's a special lent menu (vegetarian menu for others) which is available throughout the year. Besides, there's a whole section with Russian porridges, oatmeal, buckwheat, millet, semolina, and rice with various fillings. The fish section is particularly wide, and no wonder if you remember that Rostov stands on the fishy Lake Nero. And look for 'Old Russian cuisine' sign next to some of the dishes. These are prepared using medieval recipies from Russian monasteries, including those from Rostov.

About
Although the restaurant has a very strange name, and interiors of a provincial hotel restaurant (which it is, as a matter of fact), the menu is rather interesting if not too exotic. You won't find any crazy medieval Russian food combinations here but it's all well-balanced and there's enough Russianness on the menu neutralised by more familiar European food. Besides, the menu includes three main staples from Rostov: fish from the Lake Nero, pickles, and onions. The restaurant also boasts a separate vegetarian menu with a good variety of dishes, and healthy options including salads and smoothies.
The room in the back of the restaurant is a coffeeshop. It has the same menu as the restaurant but the interiors are less pompous, and it caters for people who drop by for tea of coffee, and a quick bite.
