TOY MUSEUM
МУЗЕЙ ИГРУШКИ

About
It is not coincidence that the toy museum is located in Sergiev Posad. For centuries, this town has been known for its production of toys. The famous Russian doll or matryoshka was invented and made in Sergiev Posad, as well as moving wooden toys which come from a nearby village of Bogorodskoe. The museum boasts an impressive collection of primitive medieval toys, and more elaborate toys of the 18th and 19th centuries. There're toys of all shapes and sizes, made from all sorts of materials which came from various parts of Russia. Finally, there's a showcase with Soviet toys where you're likely to find nostalgic Russian adults gazing at the toys they remember well from their childhood. On the top floor, there's an exhibition of Chinese and Japanese toys, and another exhibition with the toys which once belonged to the children of the last Russian tsar Nicholas II. There're tables with toys in several rooms, you can play with them, and learn how they work. They have puppet shows on Sundays, and they occasionally run workshops where you can learn how to make and paint various Russian toys.
Pop into a nice souvenir shop next to the ticket office before leaving, you'll find modern handcraft versions of the toys you saw in the museum on sale there.

STABLE YARD HISTORY & ART MUSEUM
КОННЫЙ ДВОР
(ИСТОРИКО-ХУДОЖЕСТВЕННЫЙ МУЗЕЙ)

About
Konny Dvor is a vital part of the Sergiev Posad State History and Art Museum which has four branches spread around Sergiev Posad. Other branches include the opulent Sancristy inside the Trinity Lavra with the treasures of the monastery (currently closed for renovation), museum of local lore, and an exhibition space for temporary exhibitions. Konny Dvor is located outside the Lavra, close to the Duck tower. It is the oldest building in town outside the walls of the Lavra, built in the shape of a fortress in 1790 to house stables of the monastery. It was later converted into a museum, and an exhibition space which occupy three buildings inside Konny Dvor. There's an exhibition on the history of Sergiev Posad, and another about St Sergius of Radonezh, the founder of the Trinity Lavra. The second floor is occupied by the exhibition of applied arts with furniture, clothes, porcelain, toys, etc. Two other buildings on the territory of Konny Dvor house an exhibition on the Russian village, and on the Russian doll. There're also temporary exhibitions in a room next to the Russian doll exhibition.
