ASEYEVS MANSION
УСАДЬБА АСЕЕВЫХ

About
One of the most beautiful buildings in Tambov, this art nouveau villa stands on the high bank of Tsna river on the ourskirts of Tambov. The house was built in 1905 by the famous Moscow architect Lev Kekushev for the family of a rich Tambov merchant Mikhail Aseyev. The mansion boggled the mind of Aseyev's contemporaries. It was exquisitely designed, it was luxurious and innovative. However, the family only lived there until 1918 when the house was nationalised by the Soviet government and the family had to immigrate. It then housed an orphan asylum, and later a hospital (Russian poet Osip Mandelstam was among those who were treated there). The museum opened here in 2014. Currently, the museum can only be visited on a guided tour in Russian. There's no need to sign up in advance, just show up during the working hours and they'll assign a guide for you. Aseyevs Mansion is a branch of the famous Peterhof Museum near St Petersburg which means that it often receives valuable collections from Peterhof for temporary exhibitions. Currently, there's a superb exhibition of the Danish porcelain which belonged to the Russian royal family including the last tsar Nicholas II who was the son of a Danish princess.

TAMBOV REGIONAL ART GALLERY
ТАМБОВСКАЯ КАРТИННАЯ ГАЛЕРЕЯ

About
The oldest museum in Tambov, the Tambov art gallery opened in 1895 in the present building. The first items in the collection were donated by local philanthropists. After the revolution, many paintings, icons and statues came from local estate and mansions after their former owners were forced to flee by the Red Army. The first two rooms of the gallery are decorated with portraits of those aristocrats and their families. There's also a good collection of late 19th and early 20th-century Russian art including works of Tropinin, Serov, Petrov-Vodkin, Goncharova, etc. There's also a room dedicated to European art (predominantely Italian and Dutch) which also came from private collections in the estates. The upper floor houses temporary exhibitions. Currently, there's a superb exhibition of Pablo Picasso's famous series of litographs Suite 347.
