TAGANROG

Taganrog is one of the most charming Russian towns in the south, with rich cultural and historical heritage. Its most famous residents include Russian writer Anton Chekhov and a Soviet actress Faina Ranevskaya who were born and raised here. Unlike other southern Russian cities, Taganrog has miraculously preserved a look and an ambience of a 19th-century merchant town. At times it feels almost like a tropical town with rich vegetation and breathtaking sea views. In fact, some Russians actually choose Taganrog and Azov Sea as their holiday resort so do not be surprised if you see overcrowded beaches in summer. In the 19th century, when Chekhov lived here, Taganrog was a vibrant merchant town with large Greek, Italian and Jewish disporas, whose inhabitants later became the prototypes for Chekhov's characters. However, the people of Taganrog meticulously preserve every object or building linked to their famous fellow townsman. In fact, it's hard to talk about anything in Taganrog without mentioning Anton Pavlovich. The street he was born in now bears his name, as well as the library, the Taganrog university, and the theatre. The houses where Chekhov was born and the house where his family moved later on were turned into museums, as was the school where he studied.

TO GET AROUND

The centre of Taganrog is beautiful, with many boulevards and beautiful 19th-century architecture. It isn't small but rather enjoyable to walk if you have time. Otherwise, tramways are probably the best way to go from one place to another.

Taganrog railway station is located far from the centre. It's best to take a taxi or a bus to go to the old part of the city. The bus station is more central, you can walk from there to the Old town on foot.

TO GET THERE

The easiest way to get to Taganrog from Moscow is by taking a train or flying to Rostov-on-Don, and then taking a commuter train (elektrichka) or a bus to Taganrog.

Tickets for Moscow-Rostov-on-Don trains can be purchased online or at the station (buy a few days in advance). Tickets for commuter trains can be purchased at the Rostov-on-Don railway station. Make sure you're at the right station. There's one that services long-distance trains (from Moscow, etc.), and the other for commuter trains. They're located on the same street, 3min walk from each other. The bus station which operates buses from Rostov-on-Don to Taganrog is located in front of the railway station.

Commuter trains from Rostov-on-Don to Taganrog run several times a day (with more services in the morning and in the evening, and fewer services in the afternoon). It takes 1h20min-2h to get to Taganrog depending on the train. The faster express trains run 5 times a day.

There're at least two buses an hour to Taganrog. The travel time is 1h30min but buses tend to be less comfortable than trains.
